Is your home secure? You may have security bars on your doors and windows and may even have a security alarm throughout your house. But is that enough? You may think so, but a lot of the time homeowners will overlook their garage door. One of the new ways, favored by burglars to get into your home, is by way of your garage. Here’s how they are doing it. Using a wire hanger they shimmy up your garage door, hook the emergency bar and they’re in your garage in six seconds. They will then kick on the door leading into your home, set off your alarm for those who have one, and wait inside for the police to come and check out the home. After law enforcement assesses that there is no damage or signs of an intruder they leave and call it a false alarm. Now these burglars can take their time getting into your house. Fortunately, having the proper door lock system will help keep burglars and intruders from getting into your home. VF&I Garage Door Services offer a few tips on keeping your home safe.
Garage Door Single & Double Sided Cylinder Deadbolt Locks
You will find there are two kinds of deadbolts. There’s the single-cylinder deadbolt which uses a key on the outside and a knob on the inside to open and close it. Then there’s a double-sided cylinder deadbolt that requires the uses of a key on the inside and outside of the door. Deadbolts are solid steel and can’t be opened unless the mechanism is in the open position. Deadbolts are great to reinforce your door and are commonly used on the garage door for that reason.
Garage Door Side Bolt Lock
Side bolt locks are discreet and often overlooked by burglars. These locks make it impossible for an intruder to open the door from the outside. It’s a simple but effective method to improve home security.
Electronic Garage Door Security Locks
For the Back to the Future fans we do have electronic garage door locks that require your finger print to open the lock and not a key. Exciting, right? The electronic door lock can hold multiple figure prints so you have control of who can gain access to your home. This is the more advanced door lock system. Electronic locks use magnets, solenoids, or motors to actuate the lock by either giving power or removing power. The electronic lock is simple to use much like a light switch. Its lock is similar to a deadbolt. It uses a strong steel cylinder latch to reinforce your garage door. The Electronic lock system is more of an investment but some will say well worth it to give your home the added protection.
Keyless Digital Garage Door Locks
Keyless locks are much like an electronic lock system but instead of the advanced technology using finger print readers, it’s much simpler. The keyless lock uses a keypad with a code chosen by the homeowner. This code can be changed regularly. There is no key hole to be picked by an intruder.
T-Handle Garage Door Locks
These locks are commonly found on the garage door itself. The T-handle lock was obviously named for its T shaped handle. Using a key and turning the handle releases the door safety bar. Now your garage door will open without the use of your garage door remote, which is strongly suggested in the event your remote battery runs out. You will still have access into your garage and still keep intruders out of your home.

For those who are still wondering how to prevent a burglar from using a coat hanger from opening your garage door, simply use a zip tie. You will see a small hole at the top of your emergency release bar. Put the zip tie through the hole and zip it closed. In an emergency you can still break it with the release cord and buglers don’t have enough force to open it. VF&I Garage Door Services stands by for all your home garage door needs. Contact us today!
