Just like other areas of your home, garage doors have many different options when it comes to choosing the garage door that’s best for you. There are different material choices that all have their benefits. It all comes down to what suits your garage door needs the best. VF&I Garage Doors explains the different materials garage doors can be made of and their strengths and weaknesses. There are six materials that garage doors are made of.
Wood Garage Doors
Wooden garage doors are a high end option. They can add a tremendous amount of curb appeal to any house. They come in a variety of different types of wood and stain colors. The choice in wood makes a large difference in the price of the doors. They do need refinishing after time which makes them a high maintenance door. They also don’t last as long as other garage doors made from different materials.
Wood Composite Garage Doors
Wood composite garage doors weigh less than a solid wood door and still give you the look of a wood door. They weigh less because the frame is made of wood and then covered with sheets of fiberboard. You can achieve the same look as a wood door, but they are more cost efficient. They are also a better option for large double doors because of their weight.
Steel Garage Doors
Steel garage doors are very durable and less expensive than wooden doors. You should make sure they are made of two layers of galvanized steel for the best results. They come with or without insulation. Steel doors can easily be painted to match your house, which is a plus. However, they are known to be easily dented and are subject to rust, so you may want a steel door with a fiberglass overlay to help avoid these issues.
Vinyl Garage Doors
Vinyl garage doors are a great durable option. Vinyl is incredibly dent resistant and considered a low maintenance door. Other than the occasional rinse with your hose, you don’t have to put much effort into maintaining them. They are often built on a steel frame and filled with polyurethane insulation. One downside to vinyl is the lack of customization. They don’t come in a wide variety of colors and finishes. They have at times shown signs of warping in extreme heat as well.
Aluminum Garage Doors
Unlike steel doors, aluminum doesn’t rust. Aluminum garage doors are a very lightweight option and over the years, have become a very sturdy option as well. The aluminum doors made from dent resistant materials come at a higher price tag, but you don’t have to worry about them getting easily dented. If you choose aluminum doors made from cheaper metal, you run the risk of dealing with denting.
Fiberglass Garage Doors
This a great customizable choice. Fiberglass garage doors can be made to mimic other materials such as wood and they are very affordable. Fiberglass is also a durable option in coastal cities or places that are subject to sand, salt or water that can break down other materials. They are also usually built on a steel frame and filled with polyurethane insulation.
